Kenora declares state of emergency

Roads in the Whiteshell area are also washed out after the storm Friday night. Ken Middleton

The City of Kenora declared a state of emergency on Monday after significant rainfall and flooding hit the area over the weekend.

More than 190 millimetres of rain fell over a two day period, and more than 20 roads, including a few main roads in Kenora, are under water or washed out, according to a City of Kenora media release.

“Most of them have either been reopened but in some cases there’s too much water and they’re not,” Mayor Dave Canfield told 680 CJOB.

“Hopefully if we don’t get any rain, the forecast looks pretty good for the next week, the water will start to peak and come down and hopefully alleviate it.”

Canfield said there are a lot of beaver dams they can’t control in the woods around the city. When they break during a storm, it’s like a domino effect with all the water rushing down and taking out the roads, he said.

“It’s kind of a part of the beautiful nature we live in here. This is one of the things you have to put up with to live here.”

Declaring a state of emergency allows communities the opportunity to access provincial funding to help with cleanup.

Canfield said plans for the city’s Canada Day celebrations on the waterfront are still going forward.
