Driver causes 4 collisions in 5 minutes, charged with attempted murder

BEDFORD, N.S. – RCMP have charged a 21-year-old Bedford man with attempted murder following a bizarre and dangerous series of events.

Police say the driver of a Honda van caused four serious collisions within a five minutes.

At around 3 p.m. on Saturday, police officers from Ingonish responded to reports of four separate collisions involving the same vehicle on White Point Road in South Harbour.

Police say the driver collided with an SUV and two motorcycles. Investigators say he narrowly missed a fourth vehicle before ramming into a guard rail.

All of the events happened within a four-kilometre stretch of roadway.

Police say the van first collided with an SUV driven by a 49-year-old woman which had a five-year-old boy as a passenger. The driver fled the scene and hit a motorcycle, causing the two riders to be ejected.

The driver left the scene again and hit another motorcycle, causing the two riders to be ejected. He continued driving, dragging the motorcycle approximately one kilometre before driving through an intersection and narrowly missing another vehicle.

The ordeal came to an end when the van crashed through a guard rail and the vehicle was immobilized.

Police say the driver assaulted two bystanders attempting to help him following the crash as well as two police officers after he was arrested. Police say none of the parties involved in the collisions were known to the suspect.

Daniel Keays is facing a number of charges including attempt to commit murder, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and assault causing bodily harm. He has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on Monday.
