The Legacy Trail near Canmore, Alta. reopened Friday afternoon after a Thursday closure due to grizzly bear activity.
Jill Sawyer, regional communications officer with Alberta Parks, said the Legacy Trail is “primarily a cycling trail” and is the paved connector between Banff and Canmore. It runs along Highway 1.
Until the trail was reopened, people were warned to avoid the area and take alternative routes.
There are some things that the public can do to stay safe while in the backcountry and help to keep wildlife safe.
“In order to decrease the chance for a negative wildlife encounter when out enjoying the national parks, people need to follow safe travel practices,” said Tania Peters, public relations and communications officer for Parks Canada in an email to Global News. “Remember to travel in groups, make noise, be aware of your surroundings, keep pets on leash, carry bear spray and know how to use it.”
It is important to remember that it is illegal to feed wildlife.
