DOLLARD-DES-ORMEAUX — A north-south corridor that’s been in the works for 31 years could find its way off the drawing board soon.

Plans call for a widened boulevard that runs north-sorth where Jacques Bizard Boulevard and Sommerset Street are. It would connect to Highway 40.

Plans seem to be moving ahead to stem potential traffic caused by the now green-lit West Island train.

According to Kirkland Mayor Michel Gibson, it would be a much-needed fourth north-south road. “It makes sense,” he said.

Another side effect of the upcoming light rail project is where the stations would be — Gibson favours a site close to l’Anse-a-l’Orme.

But that creates a quandary: environmentalists worry putting a light-rail station near the wooded area would encourage development nearby. Sue Stacho, of Sauvons L’Anse-à-l’Orme, wants officials to bar development of the green space before the station gets built.

West Island mayors are slated to meet with Caisse de Dépôt officials regarding the station’s location July 6.
