Penticton RCMP issue warning of CRA scammers

Peterborough police say a senior lost nearly $20,000 in a lottery scam. File

PENTICTON — Penticton RCMP are warning residents to hang up on fraudsters posing as the tax man.

On Wednesday, the local detachment received 51 phone calls from residents, all of whom reported of being bullied by a caller who identified themselves as a Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) employee.

The following morning, police say the caller escalated and threatened to kill the person on the other end of the line.

“I am asked to remind people of this scam every few months,” said Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth.”If you have elderly relatives, please sit down with them and explain this scam and tell them to never pay anything or provide information because someone on the phone told them to, just hang up.”

RCMP remind residents that the CRA would never call residents in this manner with communications conducted by mail or in person.
