UPDATE:  The West Kelowna Fire Department has deemed the fire that took place in West Kelowna on Friday was accidental.  However, the ignition source was not able to be conclusively determined by investigators or through statements from reidents and bystanders.

The West Kelowna Fire Department is reminding people to use extreme caution with any source of ignition.

West Kelowna and B.C. Wildfire crews have now extinguished a forest fire burning near homes.

Homeowners that were evacuated have now been allowed back into their houses.

The fire ignited at around 11:30 a.m. in a forested area just below the Diamond View subdivision near Westside Road.

Nine homes were evacuated.

“The fire is very close,” said area homeowner Ted Golda. “It’s about 150 metres from homes maybe.”

A helicopter and bird dog aircraft were called in to help fight the flames.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
