WINNIPEG — A former Winnipeg mayoral candidate has died.
David Sanders passed away from cancer Sunday afternoon, according to his son, Jim Sanders.
Sanders said his father was in the hospital over the past month battling the disease.
“My father was the conscious of this city. He worked so tirelessly to help others. His belief in social justice and equality spanned his whole life and inspired me in all that I do. I will miss him dearly,” Sanders said on a Facebook post.
“I know his spirit now overlooks our city, this province, and will infuse the hearts of all those dreaming and working for a truly beautiful city where we are all together as one.”
David Sanders ran for mayor in the 2014 race and finished fifth out of seven candidates.
The lawyer and former deputy minister of urban affairs become well-known at city hall, where he regularly appeared before council meetings to ask politicians about their work.
Sanders held a Master’s degree in political studies and economics and was a practicing lawyer. He was also a certified management consultant and commercial real estate agent.
“He’s touched many people in Winnipeg, but was always so humble… a lot of people will be feeling his loss this morning,” said his son.
