It’s taken nearly 2,000 years, but regular people will get to feel what it is like to walk on water thanks to a project by the artist Christo, “The Floating Piers.”
Christo unveiled his new temporary installation on Lake Iseo, a 3-kilometre floating bridge made up of 200-thousand floating cubes.
Under Christo’s guidance, workers have been assembling the floating cubes to create a runway to be clad in bright yellow fabric on Iseo Lake in Northern Italy for a 16-day outdoor installation.
“It’s totally useless, with no reason to exist,” Christo told The Associated Press Television News. “The world can live without them, they don’t make you very special, it’s not healing, it’s not nothing, it’s something done by humans and only humans can do art.”
“The Floating Piers” will be open to the public for free 24 hours a day starting on June 18.
People will be able to walk on the piers for as long as they want.
Visitors will be able to experience what walking on water “really” feels like, as the 70,000-square metre platform adapts to the waves and all water movements.
About half a million people are expected to visit, according to project manager, Wolfgang Volz.
