Part of student loan to be forgiven for rural doctors and nurses

Doctors and nurses who practice in rural communities will soon have part of their Canada Student Loan forgiven.

It’s in an effort to get more health care professionals in areas that need them the most.

The federal government made the announcement Friday morning in Winnipeg.

Doctors who practice in communities with a population fewer than 50,000 people will be eligible to receive up to $8,000 per year forgiveness to a maximum of $40,000 over five years.

Nurses and nurse practitioners can receive up to $4,000 per year up to $20,000 over five years.

This applies to family doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners who began working in a designated community on, or after April 1, 2012.

The federal government says it will invest an estimated $9 million per year on the program.
