Southern Ontario faces hot, humid weather and thunderstorms this weekend

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements and severe thunderstorm warnings across the province. Global News

Southern Ontario will be hit with its first blast of hot and humid weather this weekend, affecting air quality and increasing the chance of severe thunderstorms across the region.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement across southern Ontario, along with thunderstorm warnings for York Region and Stirling-Tweed-South Frontenac areas.

The scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop to the north and west of Lake Ontario Friday afternoon and will slowly move through the area, producing rainfall amounts of 50 mm or more in some locations, as well as pea- to dime-sized hail, and strong wind gusts.

Officials said heavy downpours could lead to flash floods and water pooling on roads, prompting an advisory to drivers to turn on their headlights and maintain a safe following distance from other vehicles.

The hot and humid air mass could also pose a health risk for those not prepared for the sudden blast of heat.

Environment Canada said older adults, infants, young children and people with chronic illnesses are most at risk from the heat, with officials advising people to drink plenty of cool liquids, dress appropriately and spend time in a cool, dry area.

Maximum temperatures will range from 28 C to 30 C across the province Friday and from 29 C to 32 C Saturday. However, with the high humidity, it will feel closer to 35 C. Overnight lows will range from 17 C to 20 C Friday evening and from 18 C to 21 C Saturday night.

There is still the risk of some thunderstorms over the weekend across southern Ontario.
