A 72-year-old cyclist that collided with a car in Stanley Park last week has died of his injuries.

Police said a car “made contact” with the male cyclist while he was riding his bike along Stanley Park Drive near Second Beach on May 17. The impact of the car caused the cyclist to lose his balance and crash onto the roadway. He was taken to the hospital for surgery due to a serious head injury.

The man stayed in hospital until Monday, when he died of his injuries.

Police are still investigating the incident and the 20-year-old driver is cooperating. There is no evidence of speed, alcohol or distracted driving playing a role in the accident.

The death of this cyclist is the ninth traffic-related fatality in Vancouver this year.
