After overwhelming positive response, the City of Edmonton is bringing back the rainbow-coloured crosswalks for this year’s Pride Parade.
The 2016 Pride Parade will take place Saturday, June 4 in Old Strathcona.
Painting of the temporary crosswalks started Tuesday. The three locations are:
- The east-west crossings at 108 Street and 82 Avenue
- The east-west crossings at 106 Street and 82 Avenue
- The north-south crossings at 84 Avenue and 104 Street
Since last year’s pilot project received such a positive response, the city has a long-term plan to install permanent rainbow crosswalks.
The city is exploring guidelines for “other decorative crosswalks that will showcase diverse communities, history and culture in Edmonton.” That would be other designs in addition to the rainbow design, a city spokesperson explained.
Once the guidelines are established, stakeholders will help determine the locations for permanent rainbow crosswalks in 2017.
