Emergency crews were called to the scene of an off highway vehicle (OHV) rollover located along a powerline trail northwest of Sundre near Birch Lake at around 1:15 p.m. Saturday.

RCMP said two people were driving a Razor 800 side by side on the powerline when they crested a hill and lost control while descending down the other side of it.

The OHV rolled and sustained significant damage to the cab area including the roll bars.

EMS performed CPR on the 37-year-old driver from Blackfalds for about 45 minutes before he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The passenger of the OHV, a 31-year-old from Red Deer, was taken to a Calgary hospital by STARS air ambulance and is in stable condition.

RCMP believe both people were wearing safety helmets and were buckled in by a four-point harness at the time.

RCMP continue to investigate the cause of the incident and await toxicology results from the Calgary Medical Examiner’s Office to determine if drugs or alcohol were factors in the fatal crash.

The identity of the two men has not been released.
