Volunteers unloaded and sorted through three truckloads of bagged donations Monday evening for the tens of thousands of people displaced by wildfires in Fort McMurray, Alta.
“What you’ve gone through is a tragedy, and we hope that you guys can basically get back on your feet with our assistance. We’re here for you and, if something happens to us, we hope you’re here for us,” said Nathaniel Gorman, a volunteer.
He was one of many volunteers at the Halifax Forum who helped out.
The donation drive started last week and was organized through a Facebook page. Clothing, toiletries and shoes were just some of the items collected in the Halifax Regional Municipality.
“They’ve lost everything, so right now we’re trying to get them the basics,” said Natasha Jollymore, an organizer.
Drives were also held in Sydney and Prince Edward Island, which resulted in at least another two truckloads of donations.
“It’s just phenomenal. It’s amazing, actually,” said Jollymore.

Bill Aspinall, a truck driver, will be transporting part of the collection.
“I have the ability to do it, and it’s a worthwhile cause, I mean, I don’t need to get paid for everything I do. People are needier than I am right at the moment, and I want to do my part to help out,” he said.
The plan is to have the donated items on the road to Alberta by Thursday.
