There are some heartbreaking parallels between the flood-damaged southern Alberta town of High River and the devastation in Fort McMurray, and as the wildfire continues to burn in northern Alberta, those in High River are reliving the day the flood waters raged.

They’re reminded of the evacuation, the unknowns and coming back to a home ravaged by disaster.
Residents can’t help but connect to the fire evacuees and offer some advice.

They suggest recovery for Fort McMurray won’t be measured in months, but rather years. And people in High River who never got compensated by the provincial government are worried about the fallout for Fort McMurray. They say they’re concerned because politicians promises to bail them out are the same ones they heard in the aftermath of the flood nearly three years ago.
Global’s Jill Croteau returned to the town to see how they’re relating to the people of Fort McMurray.
