Winnipeg breaks 90-year-old heat record

WINNIPEG — Southern Manitoba was feeling mid-summer like temperatures Thursday instead of spring. The mercury soared right across much of the province with only areas up north not enjoying the warmer weather.

In Winnipeg, we smashed the heat record of 31.7 Celsius that had stood since 1926.

As of mid afternoon Winnipeg had already hit 34 C.

There will be more than one record broken Thursday as many areas enjoy 30 plus degree temperatures.

The bad news is, this “heatwave” is leaving us quickly.

A cold frontal system will roll through Thursday evening ending the pattern of really hot temperatures. The front will cool us down, but we won’t see any rain out of this system instead it will leave us with gusty winds out of the north on Friday and a much cooler high of 19 C.

The long range range forecast has us looking very dry into next week with temperatures seasonal or warmer.

We’ll have a complete list of those record breaking temperatures throughout the province Friday on Globalnews.ca.
