REGINA – A parade of scouts and canoes overflowing with donations made their way through the streets of downtown Regina Friday morning.

They were tasked with delivering donations to a shelter in the city’s downtown.

“We’ve been collecting for about 2 to 3 weeks,” Scouts Canada Saskatchewan youth spokesperson Leo Saccary said.

Saccary and a few dozen other scouts stacked two canoes with clothing, hygiene products, and lots of food.

“We estimate approximately 2,800 pounds worth of stuff,” Saccary added.

It’s part of a nationwide Scouts Canada initiative called “Good Turn Week.”

In Regina, the Marion Centre was the ideal choice.

“We we’re looking at different organizations across the city and it just stood out,” Saccary said.

Hugo Isaza is the director of the Marion Centre, who says they see on average 80 visits per day, five days a week.

He also acknowledging the centre is run solely by volunteers, with a focus on men.

While the shelter provides both food and clothing for its users, they also provide forms of encouragement.

“They need spiritual nourishment, and we provide that for them,” he added.

That focus on faith is also why the centre is known for sharing its resources.

“We take what we need and we give things that we cannot use to different agencies,”
