PENTICTON – A man is in police custody after a break-in at a Penticton business Friday morning.
RCMP responded within two minutes to a 4:05 a.m. alarm at the Barley Mill Brew Pub to find a man behind the building holding a garbage bag.
The suspect bolted but was captured several blocks away after a foot chase.
“This was a great response by the officers on duty by capturing a thief who has no regard for the damage caused in committing crimes against a local business”, say Cpl. Chris Richardson in a news release.
The garbage bag contained dozens of packs of cigarettes.
Police also found about 40 bottles of liquor stashed outside the pub in boxes and a shopping cart.
The thief used a ladder to get into the pub’s kitchen area through a skylight and break-in to the cigarette machine.
A 30-year-old Penticton man is charged with break-and-enter, theft, resisting arrest and possessing stolen property.
