The Calgary Humane Society said more than 80 Maine Coon cats were removed from a home in Calgary’s West Hillhurst community Sunday night.
“The cats were removed due to distress as defined in the Animal Protection Act of Alberta,” animal cruelty investigations senior manager Brad Nichols said in an email to Global News Monday. He specified the seizure had to do with illness and environmental conditions.
“It is abnormal to have that volume of animals.”

Nichols declined to comment on whether anyone had been charged and wouldn’t identify the homeowner.
“Our primary focus has to be the integrity of the investigation and the best possible outcome for the cats,” he wrote. “In this case, we were fortunate to have the cat capacity to appropriately facilitate these cats.”
Nichols said the veterinary expenses will be “significant” and emphasized the internal clinic and vets will be beneficial.
Calgary’s department of animal and bylaw services said it’s not involved in the case. Alberta Health Services is also not involved in the case.
