A Lethbridge resident witnessed an inmate on the run after he fled from a work site Thursday morning.
Police said minimum security inmates from the Lethbridge Correctional Centre were working in the Henderson Lake area when one inmate escaped and ran to Lakemount Boulevard South. The citizen saw the inmate running, and called police to report his route.
Before police could catch him, the inmate broke into a residence and demanded car keys from the homeowner.
“The homeowner attempted to call 911 but the inmate grabbed the homeowner and stole her cellular phone after a struggle,” police said. The woman received minor scrapes and bruises in the incident.
The suspect then unsuccessfully tried to get into the woman’s vehicle.
After a “brief foot pursuit” police said the inmate gave up near Lakeridge Road South, where he was taken back into custody.
He was awaiting formal charges in custody as of Thursday afternoon.
