The family of former Toronto mayor Rob Ford says they plan to fully reimburse the city for the costs incurred at his two-day public visitation inside Toronto City Hall last week.

Ford’s body was allowed to lie in repose on Monday and Tuesday following his death to permit the public to pay their final respects.

The final breakdown ended up costing the city $18,676, which included paying for protocol service employees, facility staffers and increased security.

A statement released by the Ford family on Monday said they had fully intended to reimburse the city full costs related to Ford’s funeral and memorial but had thought the amount would be under $1,000.

“We were initially told that this amount would be minimal, under $1,000, which is well under what we are now told the final tally is,” the statement read.

“We still fully intend to reimburse the City, and are now simply waiting to be given a strict accounting of all the costs incurred.”

Ford passed away on March 22 after an 18-month struggle with a rare form of cancer.

The former mayor was laid to rest on March 30 following a funeral service at St. James Cathedral.
