Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) is expanding in Edmonton this fall.

The retailer, which specializes in all things outdoors, will open a 35,000-square-foot location in South Edmonton Common, the second store in the city.

“South Edmonton Common is one of western Canada’s premiere retail centres, which attracts people from throughout the city and well beyond,” MEC CFO Sandy Treagus said. “We are thrilled at the prospect of doubling our presence in Edmonton with a store designed to support all manner of outdoor activities.”

MEC signed a 15-year lease with Cameron Corporation for its South Edmonton Common store. It will move into the old Sears Home Store building, in the southwest region of South Edmonton Common.

“We take a long-term view of store developments and are confident Edmontonians will embrace a second MEC store,” Treagus said.

There is currently a MEC location downtown, on 102 Avenue and 123 Street. That store will relocate to a new building in the Edmonton Brewery District next spring. MEC said its South Edmonton Common location will be open before the downtown location makes its move. Construction on the new building for the downtown location has not started yet.

MEC offers a wide range of outdoor gear for camping, climbing, watersports and snowsports. It also offers cycling, hiking, running, fitness and yoga gear for men, women and children.

MEC has 18 stores across Canada.
