An Amber Alert and massive police search for a three-month-old baby who was in the back seat of a car stolen from a Toronto flea market has ended with the child found safe and reunited with his parents.
Toronto police say a member of the public called them after spotting the missing 1997 Toyota Camry.
Officers found the baby safe in the car around 7:30 p.m. Sunday — four hours after it was reported stolen with the infant inside and the temperature dipping below the freezing mark.
The car was found in a northwest Toronto parking lot near Dixon Road and Martin Grove Road, not far south from the parking lot it was taken from.
Police had said the boy’s father left him in the idling car while he went to the flea market around 3:40 p.m. The father saw the car driving away and chased after it on foot, but lost it when the Camry drove onto Highway 27 northbound toward Albion Road.
That prompted a province-wide Amber Alert sent out across television sets and radio stations, as police forces in neighbouring suburbs as well as the Ontario Provincial Police assisted the search effort.
Toronto police say the car thief fled the scene after ditching the vehicle. He’s described as a white male in his early 40s, around 5 foot 11 inches tall with a medium build and short blond hair, and is sought by police.
Investigators say they’re not sure if he knew the baby was in the back when he stole it.
It was the second Amber Alert to hit the province this month.
An alert issued by OPP in Orillia helped them locate a missing boy who, it turned out, had run away from home and was picked up by his parents, not a kidnapper as first feared.
