EDMONTON – A 38-year-old man from Edmonton was killed in a head-on crash about 125 kilometres south of Fort McMurray Sunday afternoon.
Wood Buffalo RCMP said the crash happened around 3:15 p.m. on Highway 881 between Janvier and Conklin. A SUV driving north collided head on with a southbound school bus.
The Edmonton man in the SUV died of his injuries on scene. He was the only person in the vehicle.
The driver of the bus — a 59-year-old man from Leduc — was not hurt, and there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the collision.
Both lanes of Highway 881 were closed for several hours while police investigated and debris was removed.
Road conditions at the time were slippery because of wet snow. Police said alcohol was not considered to be a factor.
Mounties said the identity of the victim is not being released out of respect for the family.
Highway 881 is a single lane road in northeastern Alberta, and is an alternate to Highway 63 for those driving to Fort McMurray and Alberta’s oil sands region.
