Mike McNeil, the president of CUPE Nova Scotia has passed away.

A spokesperson for CUPE says McNeil died suddenly on Saturday in Port Hawkesbury, where he had been travelling for union business.

McNeil had just turned 60 in September. He became the president of CUPE in November and was planning to run again next month.

He leaves behind his wife, Darlene, three children and five grandchildren.

CUPE says they are shocked by McNeil’s passing and says he died peacefully in his sleep.

Funeral details are expected to be made public in the coming days.
