AMSTERDAM – The International Criminal Court says it is pushing back to mid-August a key hearing in the war crimes case of Ivory Coast’s former President Laurent Gbagbo.
The court said Tuesday the confirmation of charges hearing originally scheduled for June 18 will be delayed after Gbagbo’s defence team requested additional time to prepare.
At the hearing, judges will hear arguments for and against whether there is sufficient evidence for Gbagbo’s case to proceed to trial.
Gbagbo is accused of crimes against humanity, including murder and rape, for actions committed by his supporters as he rejected an election result and tried to cling to power. He says he is innocent. He was extradited to the court in The Hague, Netherlands, in November.
The court rescheduled the hearing for Aug. 13.
