TORONTO – Chaos ensued on Highway 427 early Saturday morning when as many as 12 cars crashed after a vehicle lost its drive shaft, causing a chain-reaction collision.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. near the intersection of the 427 and Eglinton Avenue West as a drive shaft came loose and bounced across lanes, leading drivers to swerve out of its path, striking other cars and the highway guardrail.

Several drivers were treated for minor injuries.

The intersection has now reopened after a police investigation.
