EDMONTON – A man who served for several years as an Edmonton city councillor and who has been an instructor at three Alberta universities has been named chairman of the board of governors at the University of Alberta.
The Alberta government says Michael Phair’s appointment is for a term of up to three years and he may also be eligible for reappointment to a maximum of 10 consecutive years.

Phair was a city councillor from 1992 to 2007 and has taught at the U of A, as well as MacEwan University in Edmonton and Mount Royal University in Calgary.
He is currently an adjunct professor with the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Education.

Marlin Schmidt, Minister of Advanced Education, says in a release that Phair’s passion for advanced learning will ensure that the university continues to respond to the evolving educational needs of the community.
The chairman and board members are reimbursed for allowable expenses based on the board’s bylaws, but no honorarium is paid as part of Phair’s position.
