The brutal reality of layoffs can be hard to swallow, especially when the harsh reality is captured on video.
Video uploaded to YouTube Wednesday shows employees at an Indianapolis heating and ventilating company being told their company, Carrier Corp., will be relocating its manufacturing operations to Mexico, affecting about 1,400 jobs.
An employee at the air conditioning plant captured the gut-wrenching news on video.
As Chris Nelson, president of HVAC Systems and Services North America delivered the life-altering news, boos and screams rained down on him.
“Relocating our operations to Monterrey will allow us to maintain high levels of product quality…”the president said as a chorus of boos drowns him out.
The company will begin the process of moving in 2017 with the hope to have the transition completed by 2019, the president said. But the consolation of keeping a job for the time being didn’t stop the workers from protesting loudly.
“How long before people start tearing s**t up?” a man is heard saying in the video.
“Throughout the transition we must remain committed to manufacturing the same high quality products that we always do,” Nelson said.
“Yeah, f**k you!,” a man yells as workers are seen walking out.
The mayor of Indianapolis said he was surprised by the “announcement was without warning and incredibly disappointing.”
“A job lost in any part of our community affects us all, and I believe these are the times we must come together as one city to lift up our neighbours,” Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement. ”That is why this afternoon I will issue an Executive Order to create a task force that will convene local, state, and federal resources and direct every tool at our disposal toward supporting these workers in the days ahead.”
The job cuts come just days after the U.S. announced the unemployment rate had fallen to an eight-year low of 4.9 per cent.
