CALGARY – One of the city’s oldest citizens, who shared the same birthday as Calgary Transit, died last week.

Bennie Panaro turned 106 last July.

Calgary Transit said Panaro became a devoted transit rider at age 88, when her trusty Volkswagen broke down.

Calgary Transit operator Sharon Bruder described Panaro as one of her most memorable customers.

“I used to drive the 414 up and down 14 Street. I used to take Bennie to church,” said Sharon. “I would drop her off at the corner so she would have a shorter walk.”

Panaro was a widowed mother of four, an avid volunteer, bridge player and Stampede-goer.

On her birthday last July, Calgary Transit staff and Mayor Naheed Nenshi surprised Panaro at her home with a free seniors’ bus pass and a bouquet of flowers.
