KELOWNA — Kelowna now has the dubious distinction of being one of the hardest places to find a job nationwide.
According to a regional labour market report card released by BMO, Kelowna’s unemployment rate now stands at 7.6 per cent. This time last year, it was 4.6 per cent.
Other cities have high unemployment rates but Kelowna sticks out because of its high population growth of 1.7 per cent last year was overshadowed by the fact the number of jobs created in 2015 actually fell by 2.2 per cent.
The report card lists a total of 33 cities.
Kelowna now stands at 32, just above Sudbury, Ontario where unemployment sits at 8.6 per cent and the number of jobs fell by a whopping 7.0 per cent last year.
This time last year, Kelowna was in the top-five in BMO’s labour market performance ranking but tumbled 31 spots in a matter of 12 months.
