SASKATOON – The City of Saskatoon will not be granting the Saskatchewan Compassion Club a business licence. The medical marijuana dispensary was raided in October for operating without a business licence from the federal government.

On Monday, supporters hoped the City of Saskatoon would grant a municipal licence, thus allowing the club to operate in a “grey” area of the law, similar to shops in Vancouver.

A report from city administration on the possible regulation for dispensaries was presented to Saskatoon’s Standing Policy Committee on Planning, Development and Community Services Monday, saying “The regulations in place with respect to the possession, consumption, production and distribution of medical marijuana fall solely within the federal jurisdiction.”

Right now, the only legal means to purchase medical marijuana in Saskatoon is through Health Canada’s mail-order program.
