Germany, France win gold for World Cup biathlon relays in Alberta

CANMORE, Alta. – France and Germany won gold in the mixed relays to conclude the biathlon World Cup at the Canmore Nordic Centre on Sunday.

Germany won the team relay, which features two men and two women from each country. The host Canadian team finished sixth.

The French were the victors in the new singles relay which includes a man and woman from each country.

The Germans finished a comfortable one minute 16 seconds ahead of runner-up Italy in the team relay, which made its Olympic debut in 2014. The Norwegians were 1:23 behind for bronze.

Rosanna Crawford of Canmore, Sarah Beaudry of Prince George, B.C., Macx Davies of Canmore and Brendan Green of Hay River, N.W.T., crossed the line 1:34 back of the victors and 10 seconds out of a spot on the podium.

Martin Fourcade and Marie Dorin-Habert won the mixed singles relay by a 45-second margin over Austria’s Simon Eder and Lisa Theresa Hauser in second. Norway’s Lars Helge Birkeland and Hilde Fennel took bronze.

Calgary’s Nathan Smith and Julia Ransom of Kelowna, B.C., placed 12th.
