WINNIPEG – An officer with the Winnipeg Police Service K9 Unit is facing an internal investigation.
He’s alleged to have billed the service for $100,000 in overtime the past few years. for security work at the airport.
The work would involve using his service dog to check bags, but the dog may not have been properly licensed to sniff for bombs and drugs.
Winnipeg Airports Authority President Barry Rempel says it’s frustrating because they paid a lot of money for the work.
“Bluntly speaking, our costs, as we compare to other airports in the country, are simply the highest in the country,” he says.
Rempel says he’d like to get the money back but has not been reimbursed at this point.
The airports authority has also dropped its contract with Winnipeg Police for the service. They are now using the RCMP.
