EDMONTON — A 29-year-old Peace River man who escaped custody while being transferred to hospital last week is facing a list of new charges in Alberta and British Columbia.
Harley John Lay evaded police for about 24 hours after he was taken by an armed, masked man on Monday, Jan. 25. Two correctional officers were taking Lay from the Peace River Correctional Facility to Peace River Hospital for medical treatment when he escaped.
Lay and two others were arrested in northern B.C. the next morning.

Lay, Lenny Grant Tecomba and Laurie Anne Slobozian have since been charged with several offences in both Alberta and B.C.
Lay has been charged with:
- Escaping custody (in Alta.);
- Failing to stop a vehicle being pursued by police in order to evade police (in B.C.);
- Robbery (in B.C.);
- Possession of property obtained by crime (in B.C.).
Tecomba, 19, has been charged with:
- Assisting to escape custody (in Alta.);
- Assault with a firearm (in Alta.);
- Committing an offence while masked (in Alta.);
- Using an imitation firearm while committing an indictable offence (in Alta.);
- Failing to comply with a probation order (in Alta.);
- Failing to stop a vehicle being pursued by police in order to evade police (in B.C.);
- Robbery (in B.C.);
- Possession of property obtained by crime (in B.C.).
Slobozian, 38, has been charged with:
- Assisting to escape custody (in Alta.);
- Possession of property obtained by crime (in B.C.).
All three have been taken into custody. The incident is still under investigation.
