EDMONTON – There’s nothing quite like watching a movie outside under the stars. But what about in winter?

A Fort McMurray man has taken the idea of an outdoor movie theatre to a whole new level, building a screen, seats and couch completely out of snow.

“I thought it was pretty cool, unique. It’s probably a first for everybody,” said Graham Whatmough, who is originally from Ontario but has lived in the northern Alberta city for eight years.

“I figured I could try and build a wall out of snow and see how well it worked as a projector screen.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

As it turns out, it works pretty well. The snow wall movie screen stands 20 feet by nine feet. Whatmough also set up a table and generator for his projector. After more than a week shovelling, packing and shaping snow, the first showing took place over the weekend.

Whatmough said the only barrier has been keeping up with the warm weather.

“It’s taken a bit of a beating from the weather here, so I’ll have to rebuild it,” he said.

Whatmough plans to run three movies this weekend. For more information on the snow theatre, visit Whatmough’s Facebook page.
