Central Okanagan School District

A Kelowna administrator is among Canada’s Outstanding Principals (COP), selected by the Learning Partnership.

Chute Lake Elementary School principal Bruce McKay has 30 years of experience in education including teaching positions in Prince George and Vancouver.

“We look forward to recognizing Mr.McKay and his team at the January 27 board meeting. Bruce exemplifies our District moto ‘Together We Learn’ and we send him sincere congratulations,” said Board Chairperson Moyra Baxter in a press release.

McKay joined the Central Okanagan School District 25 years ago as a teacher at Okanagan Mission Secondary School. He has also taught at Rutland Junior Secondary School.

McKay became vice-principal of Bankhead and Gordon Elementary Schools in 1993. He has held administrative positions at four central Okanagan schools and has been in his current role since 2009.

“To be selected among only 40 school leaders across Canada is a great tribute to his leadership,” said Superintendent of Schools, Kevin Kaardal in the statement.

“His recognition is also a reflection of the quality of the educators that work throughout the Central Okanagan School District.”

There have been more than 400 recipients of the award in the COP program’s twelve year history.

The district says the award is presented to principals from every province and territory in the country who demonstrate innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and who have done something remarkable in public education.
