Special avalanche warning issued for much of the province

Back country recreationalists in BC are urged to take extreme care this weekend.

A special public warning has been issued by Avalanche Canada for Friday to Monday.

The avalanche area covers the northwest coast and southcoast inland, the Cariboo, Columbia and Kootenay-Boundary regions, the Purcell range and the Lizard-Flathead area.

A weak snow layer has been covered by heavier snowfalls.

The most risk is at lower elevations although hazards also exist above the tree line.

Avalanche Canada spokesman, James Floyer, says the snow pack has been relatively stable but the situation has worsened.

Floyer says people can protect themselves by staying on low-angled terrain, even below the tree line.

Skiers, snowmobilers and hikers should also wear avalanche transceivers and carrying a probe and shovel.
