LETHBRIDGE – The Community Foundation of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta donated critical funds Wednesday to the Kids First Family Centre in Fort Macleod. The centre provides programs and support to ensure the healthy growth of children and their families.
“What we do is teach parents to become better parents,” Kids First’s Trish Hoskin said.
For the first time since it was established in 2006, Kids First has a permanent home. The new 3,000-square-foot facility will be attached to the W.A. Day School in Fort Macleod. The total cost is expected to be $1.7 million.
“What this means is people can come to our centre and they will know where it is,” Hoskin added. “The plan is for it to be a community hub.”
The programs offered at the organization reach thousands of people in Fort Macleod and the surrounding area, and Kids First said the new space is expected to mean even more parents can attend.
Wendesday’s donation will be matched by several other unnamed sources, potentially generating up to $250,000 in additional funds.
“It’s really making a difference in early childhood, and research shows that a number of populations are lacking in early childhood development,” Community Foundation spokesperson George Hall said.
