WINNIPEG — Winnipeg has finally been hit with a blast of winter and some Manitobans couldn’t be happier.
On Sunday Winnipeg registered its first -30 Celsius temperature of the season. By this time last year there had already been three.
While the frigid temperatures and seemingly never-ending windchill values making it feel more like -41 C and below, have some people dreaming of warmer times, for others it’s welcome news.

Outdoor rinks are finally being flooded and packed full of eager skaters. The duck pond at St. Vital is open and ready.
The ice sculptors at The Forks have been working hard to ensure everything is ready for the kick off of Icetival on Monday.
“Our team loves this weather,” said Andy Zhao. “When the weather was warmer it made it difficult.”
The 40-plus sculptors from China have spent nearly a month constructing a massive ice village. The warmer temperatures at the end of December caused a number of problems because the ice was either too thin or melting in some instances.
The Forks is also welcoming the winter back to Winter-peg. The Red River Mutual Trail has not been able to open yet this season because there is still open water along parts of the river.
It’s hoping they will possibly be able to open by the end of the week.
