WINNIPEG —  Drivers who are annoyed waiting for trains at a southwest Winnipeg rail crossing might have to be patient for awhile longer.

The Waverely underpass project could be delayed for up to a year.

Councillors were expected to rubber stamp the project on Monday, but said they didn’t have enough time to thoroughly review it.

The committee asked for the project to be delayed for 60 days on Monday. That two month extension could push the project back a lot longer.

The $155-million underpass needs to be approved by city council before the end of the month to have it ready for construction in the spring of 2017.

City councillor John Orlikow said he’s confident the lengthy delay won’t happen.

“We want to be open with the rest of our colleagues, it’s tough – there’s so much going on at city hall,” Councillor John Orlikow said. “They said they want to know more information, we will give them that information. I hope their request is genuine, and it’s not just a stalling tactic to try and wreck the project.”

It’s estimated that 30,000 vehicles and roughly 40 trains pass through the intersection each day.

Councillors said there could be special meetings within the next few weeks, which would speed up the process.
