Havelock fire station could wait up to a year for necessary million dollar repairs

Havelock’s fire chief says it could take as long as a year to repair the fire hall and get a new equipment after a fire ripped through the station last week.

The fire department had only been in their new building for two years when the station suffered extensive damage after a trucks parked inside the fire hall caught fire on Jan. 7.

The fire marshall determined the damage to the building, truck and equipment amounts to about $1 million.

Chief Arland Dunfield says everything was insured, but the fire hall likely won’t be fixed for at least a year, and their own gear it still unusable.

“We’ve picked up a couple of trucks from neighboring fire departments and we got equipment from all over the province,” Dunfield said.

“A company that we buy fire equipment from, has lend us a set of jaws (of life) and air packs and everybody has been very very helpful in getting us going again.”

Dunfield says they now have to operate out of the old village fire hall until the newer hall is repaired.
