LETHBRIDGE – It’s hard to fathom, but thousands of collectables, including motorcycles and bikes, were being stored in a 1,000-square-foot house in north Lethbridge on three lots.
“It was amazing,” Al Korols, with Bondnarus Auctioneering, said. “Every closet, every bedroom, every nook and cranny. We could not believe what we found.”
It took three months and 100 truck loads to move all of it to a 20,000-square-foot facility in Fort Macleod, Alta. The items will be sold off in a six-day auction in April.
“The man liked things a little different,” Korol said. “There were not a lot of duplicates.”
“When we went through the pile, we found a lot of items that many of us have never seen before.”
The collection of rare antiques and other pop culture treasures belonged to the late James Stewart from Lethbridge. According to Korol, Stewart was a proud vintage hoarder.
“He had a reputation of not selling off anything. He brought home unusual items and we don’t know where he got them.”
From a pristine collection of Star Wars toys, pinball machines and even a brand new payphone in the box, Korol said this is by far one of the craziest collections he will auction off in Western Canada.
“He had one room dedicated to toys; he loved his toys,” Korol said. “Many are original in the box. The vintage ones are from between the ’50s and 70s. We will have one full day of toys only.”
There are some real “gems” among the collection’s bikes and motorcycles.
“There is an engine out of a 1912 Indian Motorcycle, and he had an airplane motor for a Gipsy Moth airplane with a propeller.”
