KELOWNA — It’s that time of year when Okanagan lakes become frozen over, leading some people to venture out onto the ice.

Sometimes, the ice isn’t as stable as it looks and people can fall into freezing water through thin ice.

To ensure they are prepared for such events, members of the Kelowna Fire Department conduct ice rescue training annually.

On Thursday, seven members of the fire department took part in the training along with an instructor at the Kelowna Golf and Country Club.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The training ran from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the fire department says it is the first of four training shifts that the members will take part in.
