KIRKLAND – Opponents of a controversial development plan in Kirkland have achieved their goal of forcing a referendum on the issue.

The town had planned to rezone the former Merck-Frosst site in order to develop the area into a complex of more than 800 residences.

Residents who signed the register at Kirkland town hall told Global News Thursday that there were more than 200 signatures.

The referendum needed a minimum of 125 signatures.
