MADRID – The government says it has deployed firefighting aircraft to combat over 40 wildfires in remote mountaintop locations in northern and central Spain amid unseasonably warm weather and low rainfall.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment said in a statement Sunday it has sent specialist aircraft to the regions of Asturias and Avila in a bid to dowse outbreaks there.

The regional government of northern Cantabria said fire crews were combatting some 25 fires while the government of northwestern Asturias said half of the 16 fires within its boundaries were being brought under control Sunday.
Low rainfall during a warm autumn season has left some of Spain’s main reservoirs less than a third full, with one supplying Almeria at only 9.4 per cent of its total capacity.
