A 37-year-old man was shot and killed by police after a suspect went on a rampage with a stolen front-end loader in Red Deer, Alberta, according to RCMP.
Mounties said the officer-involved shooting took place at about 2 p.m. on Christmas Day after the suspect crashed into a number of vehicles, including an unoccupied police cruiser, in an industrial park in the northwest part of the city. They said one of the trucks hit had someone in it but they were not seriously hurt. Witnesses told Global News that a number of pickup trucks could be seen on their side or seriously damaged near the Baker Hughes Oilfield Site.
Police said their officers’ confrontation with the suspect ended in a field near Range Road 273 and Township Road 391.
According to RCMP, officers were looking to speak to the suspect in connection with the sexual assault of a 47-year-old Red Deer woman and the attempted murder of a 20-year-old Red Deer man earlier that morning. The two victims, who police said knew one another, have received medical attention and are expected to survive.
As with all other serious incidents involving police in Alberta, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating the the deadly police shooting. The RCMP will continue to investigate the sexual assault and attempted murder earlier on Christmas Day.
