Terrace man facing charges after police seize 26 stun guns

A stunning seizure by the Canadian Border Services Agency has led to the arrest of a 28-year-old in Terrace.

On April 16, CBSA agents at the Vancouver International Mail Centre x-rayed a parcel of flashlights from Hong Kong declared as “electronic toys.”

Upon closer inspection, the flashlights, 20 in total, were seized after officers verified they were high-powered stun guns.

One rectangular shaped stun gun was also seized as part of the parcel.

On April 27, a search warrant was executed on a residential address in Terrace by members of the Prince Rupert Border Integrity Program, turning up another handful of the prohibited weapons, marijuana and prescription drugs.

The seizure is “definitely a significant amount,” said Sgt. Jagdev Uppall.

“In this situation, we took 21 that were being imported, plus five that were located in the residence – I think it’s a fairly big seizure for us.”

The five additional flashlight style weapons seized at the home had the word “Police” written on the side.

A red button on the top of the weapons activates the stun gun mode.

A high-powered flashlight-style stun gun was seized recently off the street by Prince Rupert police, said Uppall, but the voltage of this particular batch is unclear.

“At first glance, they seem to be very powerful,” said Uppall. “We’re going to be sending them off for an actual analysis from our firearms experts to determine what level they’re at.”

Stun guns are often found by police to be primarily in the hands of organized criminals protecting methamphetamine labs and grow-ops.

The intended destination for this batch is still part of the ongoing investigation.

“There could be a lot of possibilities … but to say specifically they’re getting into the hands of one organized group or another – it’s difficult to say at this time.”

The Terrace man was arrested during the raid and faces numerous weapons and drug charges.
