14-year-old boy, mother battling cancer for second time – at the same time

A 14-year-old boy and his mother from Wilkesboro, N.C. are both battling cancer for the second time – at the same time.

Remmy Gambill and his mother, Leslie Gambill, live at a Ronald McDonald House in Durham, N.C. as they each recover from their surgeries.

Remmy underwent a stem cell transplant a few weeks ago for leukemia while Gambill had surgery when she found out her breast cancer had returned.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Gambill found out her cancer returned in May, while her son found out his diagnosis in July.

Both are doing OK.

“I just think ‘[my mom’s] going through what I’m going through, and if she can do it, I can do it,’” Remmy told WXII News.

Todd Gambill, Remmy’s dad, stays with his wife and son at the McDonald House when he’s not working 12 hours shifts, three days a week. The couple’s 12-year-old daughter is staying with her grandparents.

“He’s very tough, he’s the strong, silent type,” Todd Gambill said of his son.

The Gambills are all hoping to return home to Wilkesboro in late January.
