Skier rescued after frigid night on Cypress Mountain

North Shore Rescue volunteers say a skier who went out of bounds on Cypress Mountain is lucky to be alive this morning. He is back home after spending several hours out in the cold.

The skier lost his way on the mountain yesterday afternoon and called his wife to let her know he was trying to make his way back to safety. She called police, who notified North Shore Rescue.

A crew managed to track him down at one of their caches around 11:30 last night.

North Shore Rescue search manager Peter Haigh says the skier was in gnarly terrain that has taken lives before.

“He was carrying quite a lot of the equipment that we recommend as essentials,” says Haigh. “But in this sort of weather and in that terrain, he probably would not have lasted the night.”

The missing skier says he is embarrassed for having caused the situation and is calling the crew that rescued him heroes.
